To me, this seems like a perfect follow up to The Shining because it faithfully follows the events of its prequel, while also being a strong standalone story. Ewan McGregor was excellent as the titular character, and his arc gives his character a sense of earnestness and sympathy. Rebecca Ferguson as Rose Hat was perfect too, and chewed the screen every time. There is not a single scene that is not exciting when she is around. Her character is both charming and menacing while being believable. Kileigh Curran as the young psychic seeking McGregor's character's assistance is also great and despite possessing great powers is still a relatable kid. The movie features the best psychic warfare ever. The Overlook Hotel scenes are great and I geeked out seeing scenes recreated from The Shining. I guess director Mike Flanagan balanced his story with nostalgia Shining well. In the end, though the movie is almost 3 hours long, it does not feel like it. Well worth your time.

It's not easy to follow up on "The shining. But this film did a pretty good job in developing the new, branching story (given that is a novel) and simultaneously sent a love letter to all the fans out there.
Actors in lead are doing a fantastic job, storyline is carefully advancing in an organic way and I personally loved the cameos of famous actors in different acts of the film. They gave pace to it and made me wonder where this goes next.
Score, cinematography and directing are above par and work together for an immersive film experience with many references to the supernatural film history.
While some might find that a lot is going on at the same time, I believe that this is actually one of the main and great experiences of the film: to ponder how it all will get connected; and it all gets connected in a satisfying way.
One thing that i a m not certain is that I found many moments. funny but in a rather subtle way. I can't tell if it's intentional but it does give an eery feeling to the entire film!
Great, enjoyable thriller. 8/10.
